SUMMARY:ISANA SANiTy Branch - State conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE to register NOW!\n\n\n\n\nTheme: Keeping Students Safe\nVenue: The University of Adelaide | Santos Petroleum and Engineering Building – Room 304 (Gate 6 off Frome Rd – click here for map)\nCost:  ISANA Members $50  |  Non Members $150 (includes Morning Tea and Lunch)\nKeeping students safe is at the forefront of what we do in our institutions and community to ensure the well being of our international students. \nWhat makes Adelaide so liveable is the safe environment that we offer to residents. It is with this in mind that SANiTy have developed this year’s state conference program to help ensure that this legacy continues. \nJoin us to hear about the latest safety issues and the best ways that we can offer sufficient support and resources to students.  At the heart of what we do it is also critical to hear from the students\, so to finish the day we have a student panel to share their thoughts on how we can better communicate important messages relating to safety\, scams\, sexual health and crisis management. \nHighlights of the Conference \n\nExcellent networking opportunities with a variety of international education stakeholders\nExposure to effective programs delivered first hand by experts\nExploring best practice from a local and national perspective\n\nIt is important that delegates feel connected\, supported and empowered in all areas of international education. This conference aims to bring participants together to explore potential challenges in a supportive environment. By attending the conference\, participants will benefit enormously from connecting with experienced peers\, gain valuable exposure to issues they may encounter and derive important feedback for their workplace. \nDraft program\, changes may be made as planning proceeds: \n \n

SUMMARY:ISANA Vic/Tas Branch - Mental Health Social Support
DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nMental Health Social Support (MHSS): How to facilitate an effective helping process (click here for pdf flyer)\nFacilitator: Coby Liew\nCoby Liew is an experienced social worker\, psychotherapist\, and a licensed MHSS trainer in Australia. He is experienced in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Coby offers a collective ten years of working experience in various fields such as community engagement\, mental health and disability\, tertiary and higher education\, human services\, international education\, project development\, and customer service. Coby has a unique multicultural philosophy complimented with a range of valuable experiences underlying his values and practice framework. He has developed a number of successful initiatives throughout his professional career with a focus on mental health and community engagement. \nCost: ISANA members no cost | Non-members $80  (click here to join ISANA)\nVenue:\nUniversity of Tasmania \nCentenary Building \nLevel 4\, Function Area \nGrosvenor Crescent\, Sandy Bay\, TAS \nBuilding number 10 on this campus map \nOverview:\nThe emphasis in this PD session is on assisting with the emotional well being of the person whom you are helping\, rather than on the skills needed to address physical injuries and illness. For this reason\, the skills you learn may be applied to very common\, everyday situations\, especially when working with students from different backgrounds and cultures. \nThere may be no evidence of cause for the distress that you observe in someone\, but you may feel that there is nevertheless grief or stress present\, and you would like to feel competent to help in some way. Perhaps you have found yourself in a situation among distressed people where you are asked to provide help\, or you may see that help is needed\, but you are not quite sure how to offer it. Yet\, you know that to do nothing is not an option\, so you pitch in and do your best to provide comfort until professional help arrives. \nThus\, in this PD session\, you will learn how to recognise symptoms of mental distress that might not be so evident to others and what you can do when there is a need for a person (a victim’s family member\, for example) to be referred on to more advanced levels of help\, such as to counsellors\, doctors\, or the police. You will learn a different set of skills and develop your own approach that suits you best when working with individuals. \nNote: MHSS training is different from MHFA in terms of its learning content and outcomes.  \nBy the end of the session\, you will learn: \n\nsome of the core skills needed when helping your helpee(s);\nwhat roles you might take up as a Mental Health Social Supporter;\nwhat traps you will want to avoid in the helping process;\nwhat responsibilities you take on as part of this sort of caring; both to your helpee and yourself;\nwhich aspects of a person you should work with when you intend to comfort\, encourage\, or provide practical guidance to a helpee;\nwhat personal qualities and skills will help you to be effective;\nwhat “micro-skills” will help you to have maximum positive impact.\n\nProgram schedule:\n0830  Registration and networking \n0900  MHSS training (Part one)* \n1000  Short break \n1030  MHSS training (Part two)* 1 \n1130  Project discussion and preparation \n1215 Lunch \n1300   MHSS training (Part three)* \n1400  Short break \n1415  MHSS practical exercises (Part four)* \n1515  Afternoon break \n1530  Project presentation* \n1630  Q&A\, feedback\, and suggestions \n1700  End \n*We endeavour to run every session in an interactive and interesting way to enhance participants’ learning and practice.

SUMMARY:ISANA Vic/Tas Branch - Wellbeing 101: We are what we eat\, we become what we think about + AGM
DESCRIPTION:Mental health issues\, such as depression and anxiety disorders\, account for the highest burden of global disability. Half of mental illnesses first manifest prior to 14 years of age and childhood disorders are linked to a range of long-term deleterious social\, criminal and economic outcomes in adulthood. Since 2009\, a research team at the Food and Mood Centre (Deakin University) has led many observational studies\, across countries\, cultures and age groups\, showing that diet matters to depression and other health issues. \nBetter quality diets are consistently associated with reduced depression risk\, while unhealthy dietary patterns – higher in processed foods – are associated with increased depression and often anxiety. The importance of good nutritional intake at an early age is explored in multiple studies\, including a systematic review in 2014\, which found that a poor diet is linked to poorer mental health in children and adolescents. \nThe emphasis of this PD session (self-care) is to learn how our food consumption may affect not just our physical health\, but also our mental health and wellbeing. Participants will also learn how our ‘six core needs’ drive our decision and behaviours on a daily basis\, and develop awareness into why we do the things we do and who we become as a result. \nPROGRAM SCHEDULE\n11:30 am     Registration \n12:00 noon  Lunch and networking \n1:00 pm       Well being 101 (Part one) \n1:50 pm      Short break \n2:00 pm      Well being 101 (Part two) \n3:00 pm      Afternoon break \n3:15 pm      Well being 101 (Part three) \n4:30 pm     Q&A\, feedback\, and suggestions \n5:00 pm    End

SUMMARY:National Code: Empowering International Students
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nISANA is seeking students who want to learn about consumer protection in the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act.\nISANA: International Education Association\, with funding from Study Melbourne\, is undertaking a Consumer Protection and National Code Project to increase international students’ awareness of the ESOS Act\, specifically the National Code 2018.  If ESOS is to be successful in providing consumer protection\, the consumers (international students) need to understand the legislation and where to go if their provider (institution) has not met its ESOS obligations.\n\nStudent Participation…\nInterested to know more? By looking at each National Code standard we want to gain a better understanding of what students should expect from their institution and we’ll explore the connection between an institution’s obligation and an international student’s visa conditions. \nStudents selected will form project teams to consider how to communicate this information effectively to international students in Victoria. Project teams will present their ideas to a group of interested stakeholders. Together we will decide which ideas progress to the development stage. \nWhy should you participate?\n– Receive a $250 voucher and certificate! \n– Gain a better understanding of your rights when studying in Australia \n– Become aware of the services and support institutions are required to offer to international students \n– Interact with like minded international students who want to make a difference and expand your network \n– Share your knowledge\, skills and great ideas \n– Develop teamwork and presentation skills \n– Be involved in a project that will improve the international student experience. \nHow to get involved:\n\nRegister your interest including name\, institution and country of citizenship ESOS4Students@gmail.com\nAttend the Introductory session Friday 21 February at Study Melbourne\nSubmit an Expression of Interest (EOI) at the introductory session.\nParticipate in all three Workshops.\nWork with your group to develop and present the group’s ideas.\n\n
