DESCRIPTION:A One-Day Conference \nConveners: Catherine Gomes (RMIT) and Helen Forbes-Mewett (Monash University) \nThe year 2020 will go down in history as the year that got cancelled due to a global pandemic that disrupted global and local systems in an unprecedented and rapid manner. In a relatively short time\, the COVID-19 coronavirus became a pandemic with devastating effects on societies\, governments and economies world-wide as it challenges the normality of everyday life. Starting out in the Chinese city of Wuhan\, the virus’ lack of discrimination about who and where it infects has had an exceptional impact on international education as destination countries and service providers were some of the early casualties of this evolving health crisis. The result has been almost daily decisions being made about course delivery options with online delivery being the best possible teaching and learning route in the wake of travel bans\, self-quarantine and social distancing in order to limit the spread of the virus on destination country populations. International students have been subject to job losses\, been unable to pay their rent or buy food for themselves. Meanwhile international students\, especially those from China and of East Asian descent have been reporting heightened racism and xenophobia directed their way. While institutions\, governments (federal\, state and local) and various parts of the community. \nWhile COVID-19 has become the quickest acting disruptor the world has ever seen\, what are the effects of both the pandemic and the decisions made by governments and education stakeholders on international education? How can international education move forward and what can it do to futureproof itself in the event of another global disruptor? How have international students been impacted by institutional\, government and community responses to the pandemic? How have international students dealt with these responses? What role has social media played in the way international education and international students are viewed in destination and sender countries? What are the directions and measures international education stakeholders have been taking during the pandemic? What are the directions and measures international education stakeholders should take in order to support international students after the pandemic ends? What lessons are to be learned from the disrupting impact of the pandemic? Is there any fallout from directions and decisions made in response to the pandemic? \nWhile the COVID-19 pandemic is an evolving crisis\, it is one that reveals how international education and international students have become ‘disrupted’ in many ways. SUMMARY:ISANA Vic/Tas & Vision International: “Longing for Belonging” - An investigation into International Student Secondary Student Experience
DESCRIPTION:The pre-COVID-19 five-year period of national enrolment data shows a 25% increase\, from 20\,523 international students in Australian schools in 2015 to 25\,564 in 2019. Statistics from Department of Education\, Skills\, and Employment indicates there remained 20\,424 international students in Australian schools in November 2020 despite continued COVID-19 impacted travel restrictions. Yet\, the majority of research in international education in Australia and internationally has concentrated on international students in tertiary settings. \n  \nThis seminar reports on a research project funded by the Australian Research Council that addresses the teaching\, learning and connectedness of an un(der)examined cohort of young people who complete their secondary school education as international students. The project involves: (1) a survey with international secondary students in Queensland\, New South Wales and Victoria; (2) in-depth interviews with 60 international secondary students in 8 Australian schools (4 government and 4 private schools) in Queensland and Victoria; (3) focus group interviews with domestic students who were in the same year level as the international students; (4) in-depth interviews with school principals and/or international coordinators; (5) in-depth interviews and/or focus groups with small groups of teachers\, and (6) interviews with homestay providers. \n  \nThis seminar will discuss the key findings about international students’ experiences—be they face-to-face\, online\, within or beyond the boundaries of schooling. In particular\, it analyses the impacts of English language competence and online activities on their wellbeing\, belonging and academic performance. It will then address recommendations for practice based on the good practice examples and initiatives that the 8 participating schools are adopting to enhance international students’ learning\, wellbeing and belonging. Links will be made across the school\, VET\, and HE sectors based on parallel projects on international students in these sectors. \n  \nThe seminar is most relevant to international coordinators/international program managers\, teachers\, leaders and practitioners from schools and other education sectors who are concerned about enhancing international students’ experiences and internationalisation of education. The session will be of interest to professional organizations\, government representatives\, and agencies who work with schools and education providers to support international students. \nPresenter:\nLy Tran (PhD) is a Professor in the School of Education\, Deakin University\, Australia and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. Her research focuses on international students’ experiences\, internationalisation of education\, student mobility\, and staff professional development in international education. She leads a couple projects funded by the Australian Research Council and other organisations on enhancing international students’ experiences and graduate employability. Her research has won a range of awards\, including the 2020 Shining Star Achievement in Research Award in the Noam Chomsky Global Connections Awards. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation followed by a question and answer session with Klara Major and Madeleine Ferguson from the Commonwealth Ombudsman’s Students team. \nParticipants will be encouraged to send in any questions and topics prior to the session. \nThe Commonwealth Ombudsman\, who is also the Overseas Students Ombudsman\, can consider complaints from international students about problems they’re having with private education providers. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Ombudsman received a wave of complaints from students who couldn’t or didn’t want to study online. Over time\, the main complaint issues changed to students seeking allowances for their financial distress\, and we are now seeing complaints from students overseas who can’t travel to commence their studies in Australia\, and are asking for refunds of pre-paid fees. \nThe Commonwealth Ombudsman is also the Overseas Students Ombudsman. In this capacity\, the Ombudsman: \n\ncan investigate complaints about problems that intending\, current or former overseas students have with private schools\, colleges and universities (education providers) in Australia\nprovides information about best practice complaints handling to help private education providers manage internal complaints effectively\npublishes reports on problems and broader issues in international education that we identify through investigations.\n\nThe Ombudsman’s Office has investigated more than 2\,000 complaints from international students\, giving them a unique insight into the problems that international students can face\, and what can be done about them.

SUMMARY:ISANA SANiTy Online PD: Understanding the healthcare system in China to better assist Chinese international students in Australia and offshore
DESCRIPTION:July 22 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm ADELAIDE\nRegistration:  CLICK HERE\nJoin ISANA SANiTy members in conversation with health care professionals (student and staff) to gain valuable insights into the Chinese health care system. We’ll hear about the process that a citizen would have to undertake to see a doctor\, specialist\, obtain medications\, and generally receive support\, as well as the differences and similarities between the hospital systems in China and Australia. This session will also include an introduction to StudyAdelaide’s newly developed Offshore Critical Incident Manual. ISANA members will leave this session with a better understanding of Chinese students’ issues when dealing with Australia’s system\, and how best to support and refer Chinese students\, studying offshore in China. \nFormat:    \nSmall group brainstorming and discussion of current issues in referring and supporting Chinese onshore and offshore students with health issues. These scenarios will be addressed by our panellist experts\, including tips and examples by each panellist. The final 20 minutes will be devoted to questions from the attendees. \nThe workshop will be conducted via Zoom to enable presenters and attendees from across Australia and New Zealand to attend the session. \nPanel:\nLi Li\n Li Li works at the University of Adelaide as Student as well as in Central Adelaide Palliative Care Service for people with terminal illnesses.  Prior to these roles\, she worked with automotive workers and their families to help them making life transitions\, when they were facing the national closure of the automotive manufacturing industry during 2016 – 2018.  She also has 7 years of clinical experience in working with people with dementia and mental illnesses (presented as squalor\, hoarding\, and other complicated grief).  Before coming to Australia\, she was a university lecturer in the areas of linguistics and comparative cultural studies for 9 years. \nLyujing (Lindsay) Huang\nLyujing (Lindsay) Huang is a Masters of Nursing student at the University of Adelaide. She’s passionate about holistic patient care in a collaborative environment. She also volunteers at the University as an International Peer Mentor\, and has provided Chinese cultural insight to the staff and students in International Student Support. \n  \n  \n\nMary Ann Seow \nMary Ann Seow is the Immediate Past National President of the ISANA International Education Association. She served as National President for two terms from 2014- 2017 and has been actively involved in international education in Australia for over 15 years. Currently an ISANA State committee member\, Mary Ann provides consulting and professional training to the international education sector. Her passion lies in working in the international education sector and collaborating with agencies\, student groups and peers to assist and support international students and to advance research and standards in international education. \n

Understanding how your values may skew your perception of events\, people\, beliefs\, and expectations creates a greater self-awareness of the impact of external stimuli upon yourself\, as well as an increased capacity to understand\, appreciate and embrace different perspectives. \nA 37 pack of cards will be posted to each participant.
