Intercultural Communications Online: ways to engage in a culturally inclusive manner when online
Presenter: Shanton Chang
Intercultural communications has been an important aspect of engagement with international students. Even with face to face communications, practitioners are aware of the range of challenges and opportunities that impact on such communications. With much of communication moving online, how does intercultural communications take shape? What are some of the key issues to look out for? How do we ensure that we continue to engage in a culturally inclusive manner when so much of what’s online seems to be ‘one-size-fits-all’.
Associate Professor Shanton Chang is Associate Dean (International) at the Melbourne School of Engineering, The University of Melbourne. He has been involved in building the internship program at the university, mentoring students, and engaging with industry partners to enable positive graduate outcomes for students. He continues to keep in touch with industry partners and alumni, to understand the needs and expectations of employers. He has spoken publicly at many forums on International Student employability. He is one of the co-founders of Victorian Working Group on International Student Employability (VicWISE). He is also a researcher on the information behaviours and needs of international students, and on teaching and learning across cultures. He has been invited to present on these topics at multiple forums in Australia, New Zealand and internationally. He was a past Vice-President (PD) of ISANA and has previously convened 4 ISANA National Conferences. He is also an ISANA Life Member.
