ESOS for Students is now LIVE!

On 28 August ISANA was delighted to launch the ESOS for Students resources developed with the support of Study Melbourne’s International Student Welfare Program.  These resources aim to increase awareness of the National Code and the rights and responsibilities of all international students studying in Australia.

The posters, fact sheets and videos are aligned with the international student journey.  International students were instrumental in their development to ensure key messages are conveyed.

We encourage you to share these resources with your students and agents. This could include providing a link to the resources from your website, making reference to them in your communication, displaying copies of the posters and joining our groups on FacebookInstagram and WeChat

Farewell to Andrew & Janette
QLD branch bid a fond farewell to Andrew Parkinson and Janet Flanagan. The enthusiasm, motivation and contributions that they brought to the committee over the years have been outstanding, so thank you! We wish you both all the best in your future endeavours. Please don’t be strangers and be sure to keep in touch!
It takes a Village!
The UQLife Virtual Village is a new initiative led by the UQ community that aims to bring your everyday connections onto one platform, where students can transition their study and social life online. A partnership between volunteers, mentors, alumni, student support, employability and many more areas of the University, the Village offers students the opportunity to connect with groups and individuals, attend workshops and social events, network with others in their community, as well as help them navigate their way through their #uqlife. Students can engage in the village via two streams – UQ chats (one on one chats and appointments) or via UQ Mates (group chats, gatherings and hangouts).
We are all navigating unprecedented times – the world is changing and life as we know it is moving rapidly. What we want and need to maintain is a sense of community spirit, with routines and connections.

Resilience Against Racism

Resilience Against Racism launch event featuring a panel Racism: What can we do about it. The project was initiated as a result of increased racism towards people of Asian appearance due to COVID-19 and is supported by Study Melbourne and Scanlon Foundation.

Date: 17 September 2020
Time: 12:30 – 14:00

About the project

Everyone deserves to belong. Whether you are a recently arrived international student who is living and studying in Australia temporarily or an Australian of different cultural backgrounds, every person regardless of race and religion deserves to feel belong in Australia. However, according to the Scanlon Foundation Mapping Social Cohesion report, 1 in 5 people experience racism in the community. In these few months since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen more racist sentiments towards people of Asian appearance.

Resilience Against Racism aims to help people build personal and community resilience to cope with adversaries such as racism. We run an evidence-based series of online workshops aiming to help people build personal and community resilience to cope with adversaries such as racism. The bespoke workshops are designed for people who may have experienced racism themselves, or have been a direct or indirect witness to racism. Driven by an evidence-based approach, the workshops are facilitated by trained culturally diverse workplace psychologists and co-designed by people with lived experience and culturally diverse social innovators.

VISA Update

On the 20th July the Australian Government announced a number of changes to student visa arrangements to support international students.

These changes include:

1. Granting student visas in all locations lodged outside Australia. This means when borders re-open, students will already have visas and be able to make arrangements to travel.

2. Eligibility requirements for a post-study work visa (Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) will be relaxed for applicants who are enrolled with an Australian education provider and have been impacted by COVID-19 and associated travel restrictions

3. Additional time will be given for applicants to provide English language results, biometric collection, and health checks where COVID-19 has disrupted access to these services.

These changes will help give international students confidence in their visa arrangements so that they can make plans to study in Australia when it is safe to do so. Read more…

 ISANA eNews

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Planning for what the future of the international education industry recovery will look like has begun with discussions on how soon a return to ‘post-lockdown’ is possible and what it will look like. However, ISANA members are still coping with immediate issues including coping with increased workloads, working from home, saying goodbye from a distance to colleagues due to lay-offs or non-renewal of contracts and in some cases, the loss of loved ones.

The one thing I keep reminding myself of is that I have experienced many previous upheavals in our industry (although not to this extent), but it was the support, resilience and commitment of my colleagues both at work, those in the industry and my ISANA peers who helped steer us through very difficult times whilst supporting our international students through their own difficulties.

As a member of the Federal Government’s Global Reputation Taskforce (GRT) I am able, on behalf of ISANA members, to raise the issues we are facing with the people who are in a position to assist. The GRT is currently meeting every Friday so I encourage you to forward your concerns to me at president@isana.org.au so I can take them to these meetings.

All States and Territories (NSW is expected to have an announcement shortly) have released student welfare package information and you can find this together with other useful links and data, on the ‘Austrade – Study in Australia’ website. I encourage you to share on ISANA’s social media sites good news stories and helpful information using the hashtag #inthistogether.

And to sign off on a happier note, I hope to bring you good news very soon about our National Code Tutorial.

Stay well and look after yourself,

Bronwyn Gilson

As such our members see firsthand the impact COVID-19 restrictions are having on the international education experience, mental and physical health, and the financial hardship of international students. With students away from the support of their friends and families the move to online studies has added to a loss of connection and loneliness.

Date: Wednesday 27th May
Time: 10 am – 11.30 am

We will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your challenges and successes during COVID-19.  It’s important during this challenging time and rapidly changing work environment to check in and take that pause.  The session will also highlight a couple of online tools/apps that many of us are using to support students and run through the user experience. These include Focus To-Do, Mindfulness App and Kahoot!

We look forward to connecting with you over zoom, sharing a coffee and having a chat.  Until then, stay well.

There is a plethora of information and fact sheets, yet we find ourselves with more questions than answers.  Globally students studying away from their home country are facing the same challenges and asking the same questions. Should I return home?  What happens to my visa?  Can I get home? How do I continue to pay fees?  Is there a reduction to tuition fees? Can I get a refund on my public transport card? Can I continue to study online if I choose to return to my home country? The list of questions is endless.

Study NSW launches International Student Welfare Services Hub
This month Study NSW launched their new International Student Welfare Services Hub on the Study NSW website to connect international students with existing support services – both locally and nationally. As of 12 April, there were 193,580 international students in NSW. Study NSW is leveraging digital platforms and relationships with federal, state and local governments, education providers and international education stakeholders to amplify trusted information on accommodation and housing, emergency food assistance, legal advice and mental health and wellbeing.

Applications open for Study NSW Partner Project grants
Applications for Study NSW Partner Project grants are open. Through these government grants, we can work together to support international students in NSW during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2014, Study NSW has co-funded international education projects that are delivered in partnership with industry to enhance the experience of international students across the state. Study NSW encourages partnership applications from a consortium of providers and organisations to ensure the benefits reach a broad range of international students. Funds of up to $110,000 (incl. GST) per project are available for 2020-21. All funds must be matched by industry contribution, including through in-kind contributions. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the Study NSW Partner Project Guidelines and Application Form available on our the Study NSW website. Applications close 7 June 2020.

Stay connected with Study NSW
Members of the international education community in NSW are invited to stay connected with Study NSW to receive updates and news, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Subscribe to the Study NSW mailing list, follow Study NSW on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or visit the Study NSW website.
