Neeti will focus on the physical challenges that native English speakers, especially, face with pronunciation of sounds from other languages i.e., mouth feel when forming unfamiliar sounds. This is one of the more challenging components of learning other languages (like Hindi for example).
Anshul and Charlene will provide some of their experiences and what a difference it makes to them, from an inclusivity perspective, when people at least try and pronounce their name(s) correctly. They will also follow-up Neeti’s session with some commonly mis-pronounced names/sounds and get the group to do some fun practice of names!
Neeti
Neeti has extensive experience in mentoring native and non-native speakers of the English language for the language and logic component of various standardized tests such as the GMAT, a test used by IVY league colleges, such as the Harvard Business School, to admit aspirants to prestigious MBA programs. She herself scored in the 98th percentile on the Verbal section of the GMAT.
In addition to teaching, Neeti has focussed on developing curricula for online education products, enabling hundreds of thousands of learners from all over the world master the art of reading, writing, and thinking critically. Neeti is fluent in English, Hindi, & Punjabi, and has an elementary skill level in speaking and reading Bengali. She studied TV and Video Production at Bournemouth University, UK, and has a second Master’s from India in Journalism and Mass Communication. After migrating to Australia, Neeti has been working as an ELICOS teacher, helping fellow non-native speakers improve their English language skills, and is only too happy when someone gets her name right in the first go. https://www.linkedin.com/in/neeti-sohal-19589855/
Charlene
Hi there, my name is Charlene, I’m from Hong Kong and I’m a 2023 StudyAdelaide student ambassador. I am multilingual and fluent in Chinese, Cantonese, and English, with Cantonese as my mother tongue.
I moved to Adelaide 3 years ago to attend high school, and I have been loving my experience in Australia ever since. When I’m not studying, I always listen to and play music, also play basketball, netball, and frisbee.
I enjoy interacting with people from all over the world and helping those in need. I’m passionate about promoting Adelaide as an attractive destination for international students and representing my peers. People often describe me as open-minded, risk-taking, and easy-going.
I value diversity and am always ready for a new challenge or adventure. Whether I’m working on academic or extracurricular events, I bring a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and grow.
Anshul
Hello people, my name is Anshul Sethi and I’m from New Delhi, India. I am multilingual and fluent in Hindi and English.
I moved to Adelaide right after covid, in Jan 2022 to pursue my BA in Business, majoring in Marketing and play professional cricket.
As a professional, I’m big on content creation and digital marketing, hence I have my own YouTube channel and my own clothing brand. As you can see, I love to keep myself busy and I’m a big cricket nuffy!
You would see me sitting in front of the TV with my friends whenever a match is on!
I enjoy interacting with people from all over the world and learning about their cultures, traditions, and practices. I’m passionate about promoting Adelaide as an attractive destination for international students, hence I started a YouTube channel which is all about international students.
On the topic of helping international students, I was given the opportunity to become a 2023 Study Adelaide Student Ambassador and I couldn’t be happier as now I get to stand for the same cause but at a bigger stage!
People often describe me as social, risk-taking, and hard working. I value diversity and am always ready for a new challenge or adventure.
