Dear *|FNAME|*

What a busy year it has been and perfectly capped off with the joint ISANA/ANZSSA Conference at The Star, Broadbeach Qld. The theme of ‘Widening Perspectives of Student Success’ certainly connected with a lot of people as this was our biggest conference to date with over 420 attendees. There was such a strong ‘vibe’ amongst delegates and it couldn’t have been started off any better than by the Key Note address from Professor Lily Kong who asked if Professional and services staff should be referred to as co-educators!

Next year appears to be just as challenging with everyone looking toward the implementation of the new National Code. 2018 also brings changes to the ISANA National Council. Following nominations and elections at our AGM I would like to introduce your new Council:
President                                     Bronwyn Gilson (previously VP)
Vice President                             Kristine Papadopoulos
VP Professional Development   Robert Spencer
VP Planning & Development      Vacant
Treasurer                                      Molly Bonnefin (returned)
Communications Officer             Brett Lyon (returned)

We join with the current Presidents of our State Branches to make a total of 10 people on the National Council:
VIC/TAS               Manorani Guy
SA/NT                  Louise Skull
QLD                     Sam Hilbig
NSW/ACT            Angela Leota-Hughes

At this time on behalf of all ISANA members I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to Mary Ann Seow, the immediate Past President. Mary Ann has guided ISANA for the past 4 years to build on the work of past Presidents and to develop networks within Industry, Government, and Public and Private providers. For me personally Mary Ann has been a great inspiration and mentor and I know she is keen to continue her involvement with ISANA. We also said goodbye and thank you to Tom Bayliss-Hack for his 4 years of work on Council as our enthusiastic Vice President Professional Development.

We also say goodbye to Tracy Noble, who for the past 8 years has been our ‘rock’ in the ISANA Secretariat. We couldn’t compete with her husband’s business and family commitments, so we wish her every success and thank her for her invaluable contribution to ISANA.

I hope you have had a successful 2017 and I hope 2018 proves to be a kind year to all.

Kind Regards,
Bronwyn Gilson
ISANA National President

National Code Fact Sheet Release
The Department of Education and Training released the fact sheets for each of the standards of the new National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018 (National Code 2018). The fact sheets were published on the National Code 2018 Factsheets page, and are available on the International Education website, from Monday 18 December 2017.

The National Code 2018 will commence on 1 January 2018. Compliance activities and audits conducted from 1 January 2018 will be against the new National Code.

Council for International Education Student Services Working Group update
As advised to members in the November newsletter and at this year’s AGM at the national conference, ISANA was invited to be a member of the Council for International Education Student Services Working Group. The working group met on the 1 December in Canberra to focus first on providing advice to Minister Birmingham about student exploitation and focus on delivering advice to the sector and government.  The group will be time limited to approximately six months. The group met via teleconference on 18 December 2017 to confirm the actions agreed on 1 December.

Members are advised that the working group agreed its first priority will be to consolidate views on strategies the sector can implement to help reduce workplace exploitation of international students and to increase students’ recourse to equity if they have experienced exploitation. To this end, the Working Group through the DET Secretariat will conduct an audit of existing protections for international students by end of January 2018. Peak bodies representing various education providers will be receiving a survey by the end of this week with a response date in late January 2018.

ISANA encourages all members who may receive this request to complete this important survey. The Working Group will meet again in early February to discuss the findings from this survey. I appreciate that it is never convenient to receive a request from government at this time of the year. I hope you agree that this issue is very important for the welfare of international students. Your cooperation and assistance in this matter is much appreciated.

Mary Ann Seow
Immediate Past President: ISANA International Education Association

Dear *|FNAME|*

As 2017 draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the achievements that ISANA has accomplished this year. The year began with ISANA being invited to a Council for International Education workshop in Adelaide in February 2017 where we discussed the following:

  • Refining and/or adding new priorities for medium-term implementation to 2020
  • Identifying key areas for Australian Government activity and desired outcomes

This was a good opportunity to express the importance of a quality student experience for students.
The student experience and members’ concerns have also been expressed in the many submissions ISANA has presented to government enquiries this year. We have contributed to the following:

  • Consultation Paper on the National Code Draft
  • Standing Committee on Education and Employment: Inquiry into School to Work Transition
  • Department of Immigration and Border Protection Policy Consultation Paper – Visa Simplification: Transforming Australia’s Visa System
  • TEQSA Consultation Paper on Proposed Changes to the publication of TEQSA’s decisions
  • Explanatory Statements and Fact Sheets for the new National Code

In each of these contributions, we have taken into consideration the issues raised by all members with respect to their students and the implications on the roles they have in the international education sector. As National President, I will continue to bear these in mind at the first meeting of the Council for International Education Student Service Delivery working group. I have been invited to be on the Working Group to support action under the National Strategy for International Education 2025 to ensure strong student support in the international education space.  The working group will meet on the 1 December in Canberra to focus first on providing advice to Minister Birmingham about student exploitation and focus on delivering advice to the sector and government.  The group will be time limited to approximately six months.

The State Branches in South Australia/Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria/Tasmania and NSW/ACT have all had successful PD/AGMs over the last month. I take this opportunity to welcome new members on Branch Executives and thank you for volunteering to play an active role in future events, programs and projects.

The year will close with our national conference on the Gold Coast. This year’s conference co-hosted with the Australia New Zealand Student Services Association promises to be exciting. We have a full program and over 440 delegates registered. We are looking forward to engaging with everyone and hearing and learning from great presentations.

Till we meet in December, on behalf of Council, I wish everyone all the best.

Kind regards
Mary Ann Seow
ISANA National President

The 2017 SANiTy Conference held on Friday 17 November, provided delegates with a forum to explore some key issues relating to diversity and international student well-being. Ishwar Singh from Pride in Diversity opened the conference with a thought-provoking awareness session on the LGBTI community. Delegates participated in several interactive exercises highlighting issues faced by members of the LGBTI community.  Ishwar also explained the characteristics of each group and tried to breakdown potential misconceptions often held by society.

Karyn Kent, Chief Executive of StudyAdelaide, delivered an overview of recent StudyAdelaide events and detailed several initiatives currently being rolled out. Karyn spoke about the recently awarded Employer Campaign, a scheme where employers offer internships, short-term placements or ongoing employment to an international students or graduate.

The AGM was held during the lunch break, with the following positions filled for 2018:

President:  Louise Skull
Vice President:  Sarah Parrington
Secretary:  Natasha Pressley
Treasurer:  Kathy Matthews
Committee:  Klaus Koefer, Shawna Hooton and Kelly Liebich

A variety of student well-being issues were covered in presentations by Terri Finn from The University of Adelaide and Nadia Lovett from University Senior College. These issues received further consideration in Lisa Kemp’s address on improving the well-being of 18-24 year olds in the Adelaide City Council area.

The conference concluded with ISANA National President, Mary Ann Seow, summarising changes to the National Code, rounding out an informative day of networking and information sharing opportunities. We wish to acknowledge and thank The University of Adelaide for the use of the room as well as StudyAdelaide and University Senior College, the conference sponsors.

Dear *|FNAME|*

This has been a busy month. ISANA was represented at the recent Australian International Education Conference in Hobart, Tasmania by myself. I was invited to chair two presentations that focussed on Under-18 international students and the protocols that need to be put in place. The presentations included one from our National Treasurer, Molly Bonnefin from Monash College. Both presentations were well received and provided food for thought to delegates. The conference also provided the opportunity to meet with key contacts from the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the Department of Education and Training (DET), Study Brisbane, Universities Australia and Education NZ. We can look forward to meeting representatives from these agencies at the upcoming ISANA-ANZSSA conference as all have expressed interest in coming.

At the conference, we also heard from the Federal Minister on the new ELICOS standards. These standards make minor amendments to existing standards to ensure quality is upheld in the future. They will come into effect next year. It is important to note that the new standards do not entail any additional tests for international students. All members would have received information about these new Standards from us in an email forwarded from the Department.

In addition to the ELICOS Standards, members would also be preparing for the new National Code which will come into effect on 1 January 2018. A number of you have asked us about the status of the existing ISANA developed and hosted National Code Online Tutorial.  We will be working on a new updated Online Tutorial for 2018. In the meantime, we will also be updating the existing tutorial to flag where changes to the Code will apply.

In the meantime, ISANA has been included in the consultation process of the Fact Sheets for the new National Code. Members of Council will do our best to ensure that the documents take into consideration the issues that were raised during the draft consultation phase.

If you or any of your colleagues were unable to participate in the webinars related to the new National Code, you may wish to go to this link where the ESOS Policy team has uploaded all the webinar presentations https://internationaleducation.gov.au/Regulatory-Information/Pages/National-Code-2018-Implementation.aspx

Finally, I encourage you to participate in upcoming Professional Development opportunities through your State Branches. If you have not registered for the National Conference, please do so as soon as you can – we look forward to meeting you on the Gold Coast.

Kind regards
Mary Ann Seow

National Code

By now members would be aware that the new National Code was announced on 15 September 2017. The published National Code 2018 is now available on the Federal Register of Legislation. As stated in the Department’s webpage, the new Code has a few changes.
Key areas for reform include:

  • protecting students by requiring more detail on a student’s course and refund arrangements in the written agreement between students and providers;
  • strengthening arrangements for the care and welfare of students under the age of 18;
  • provides greater guidance for providers on the circumstances in which student transfer requests should be granted; and
  • supporting overseas students to fulfil visa requirements by strengthening the provisions to monitoring overseas students’ course attendance and progress.

The department publicly consulted on the National Code 2018 with governments, sector peak bodies, regulators and education providers in early 2017, and feedback has informed the revised National Code. ISANA, as members are aware was consulted by the Department and members have contributed to the Department’s consideration when drafting the new Code.

Fair Work Ombudsman

https://www.fairwork.gov.au/about-us/our-role/corporate/open-letter-to-international-students

On 25 September, 2017 the Fair Work Ombudsman released its International Student Engagement Strategy. ISANA is pleased to have been consulted by the FWO in the development of their strategy and the agency will be in touch shortly to provide us with information about a communications package for international students which is designed to be delivered in instalments over the next few months. In the meantime, we urge all members to share the open letter to international students from the CEO, Natalie James to students and colleagues, urging students to be aware of their workplace rights and to seek free help from the FWO if they experience issues while working in Australia.

Department of Immigration and Border Protection

ISANA with the support of members has provided a submission in response to the Department’s Consultation paper on Visa Simplification. Council thanks members for their feedback on this important consultation. While the student visa sub-class was recently streamlined, it is also important to note that the Consultation paper did not exclude any visa sub-class. The experience of international students and members with the SSVF and GTE was noted in the ISANA submission along with recommendations to improve the system.

National Conference

Members are reminded that early bird registrations close on 11 October. We encourage members to register by the 11 October for the conference. The program is available on the conference webpage here and we hope you agree that the conference chairs have put together a very interesting range of presentations and workshops. The combined hosting of the conference by ISANA and ANZSSA offers members the opportunity to hear from a broad range of presenters, who have taken the opportunity to meet and present to the combined membership that will be present. Please go to this link to register for the conference. We also encourage all members to promote the conference to colleagues and stakeholders.

Till the next news update, on behalf of Council, I wish you well.

Kind regards

Dear *|FNAME|*

The ISANA International Education Association is a professional association run by volunteers. The contribution made by members on State and National committees and at our professional development events is invaluable. ISANA could not operate without their contribution, expertise and support. No more is this evident than in Dr Paula Durance, who has been ISANA’s Vice-President (Planning and Development). Paula was awarded a Life Membership to ISANA . She was also ISANA’s National President in 2005- 2006. Paula was elected into the position of Vice-President (Planning and Development) at the last AGM in Melbourne in 2015 and her contribution to the operation of ISANA is much appreciated. Paula advised Council of her decision to resign and step down from the position in July this year to devote more time to family and new ventures. Paula’s final contribution to ISANA was to organize and chair a planning day to discuss the association’s future strategy. We have reluctantly agreed to accept her resignation and take this opportunity to thank her for time, expertise and support on Council.

I would like to congratulate the following students and members who have been awarded the 2017 ISANA ANZSSA Conference bursary.

ISANA VIC/TAS 18th state conference was held at William Angliss. Parliamentary Secretary Frank Mcguire  For Small Business & Innovation opened the conference.
The committee had designed a very comprehensive program and participants were able to walk away with a tool box of ideas to take back to their work place.
It was exciting to see that 25% of our attendees were students due to the generous grant From Study Melbourne.
We were particularly proud of the efforts of the committee to reach out to the student advisors totaling our number of registrations to 121 for 2017.
There were heaps of opportunities for networking and it was a day of gratitude to all the professionals especially the student advisors who have worked tirelessly to enhance the student experience. It was a day of recognition and appreciation for what they have all contributed to the sector.

On August 24 we were very lucky to have a presentation from Sharon Jennings, Manager for the Sex Industry Network (SIN). It was a fascinating and interesting presentation where we all came away richer for the experience.  We learnt about the issues facing workers in the industry and the distinct issues faced by international student sex workers. South Australia is still struggling to have the sex industry decriminalised and are looking forward to the days when we can base the industry here on the New Zealand Model which seems to be the world leader.

We are planning our state Conference to be held on November 17 and consensus shows a need for presenters who can assist our service providers with best practice to support LGBTI students. We hope to have industry updates and projections form Study Adelaide,  managing expectations amongst international students, managing issues in under 18/Homestay/Accommodation, and developing coping strategies in our student populations. WE look forward to catching up with all members and their colleagues in November.

Dear <<First Name>>

PIE Awards

I am pleased to advise that ISANA has been shortlisted for The Inaugural PIEoneer Awards 2017 – Association of the year. The awards are being championed by PIE News based in the UK who provide news and business analysis for Professionals in International Education. This news service covers information on international education around the world and is a good source for those who work in the sector. We were advised of our shortlist by email on the 7 July. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony being held at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London on Friday 8th September – starting at 18.45 and followed by an after party at the iconic Gherkin building from midnight – 3am. ISANA is one of four in the category of Association of the Year. See here for more information https://thepienews.com/news/inaugural-pieoneer-awards-internatioanl-education-shortlist/ and here https://pieoneerawards.com/ The other finalists are as follows:

  1. American International Recruitment Council, USA
  2. BOSSA, China
  3. EduNova, Canada

National Code Submission

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the ISANA response to the National Code proposed changes. The submission was completed and submitted to the Policy and Legislation Section | Policy and Systems Branch, International Group, Australian Government Department of Education and Training on the 27 June.

CISA conference 3-6 July

The four day conference including two days of pre-conference sessions was attended by about 120 delegates. This year’s conference theme was ‘Students at the heart of best practices’ and this was reflected in the workshops and presentations. See conference program http://www.cisa.edu.au/cisa-conference-2017/program The conference was attended by Federal Minister for Education and Training, Simon Birmingham and closed by three members of the Council for International Education, Phil Honeywood, Helen Zimmerman and Brett Blacker.
I presented an interactive workshop on the ESOS Act and the National Code as part of the pre-conference program. This workshop was at the request of the Education Officer and his team who noted that many student leaders were not aware of this important legislation.

At the conference on Day One, I presented a session on ‘Student Services: Why, What, When and How? Can we do better?’ The purpose of the session was to encourage student leaders to be active in demanding comprehensive and supportive student services that meet the needs of students. In order to this, student leaders need to be aware of the legislations, compliance requirements and their minimal approach. They needed to use data to underpin discussions with their education institution and the session also included strategies in how they could achieve this.

As ISANA National President, I was asked to be on the selection panel to shortlist the winners of the CISA Annual Awards for Best International Student (various categories), Best International Student Event and Best Student Association. ISANA sponsored the Best International Student Event for 2016-2017 and this year, the winner was Melbourne Polytechnic for Moodji Day. ‘Moodji’ means ‘friend’ and the event celebrated indigenous culture while engaging both local and domestic students in a variety of activities – a well-deserved win.

I take this opportunity to encourage all members to reach out and support the student leaders in your organization or State.

Universities Australia Report – Respect. Now. Always

The UA commissioned report to the Human Rights Commission on sexual assault and sexual harassment on Australia’s university campuses will be released on 1 August. All universities have received their respective data. Communication to students and staff have been sent out over the past week in anticipation of the report’s findings with advice on where and how to seek support and help. ISANA understands that several of the victims as well as perpetrators are international students. We strongly urge members to be alert to your students’ reactions to media coverage of this report. There may be students who have not reported incidents and who become distressed. It is also important that all students are made aware of the various strategies that are being and have been put in place to change culture and support students.

ISANA-ANZSSA Annual Conference

Finally, I wish to encourage all members to apply for the member bursary to attend the national conference on the Gold Coast, Queensland. For details, please see below.

Dear  *|FNAME|*

We are now mid-way through 2017 and many will be preparing for new intakes in the second half of the year. All indicators at this stage are that Australia will continue to attract international students. These increased numbers come despite the changes to Australia’s visa categories and eligibility. The impact on current international students continues to be a topic of discussion.

Our Vic/Tas and Queensland Branches have organised upcoming forums where members may be able to have queries related to government policy addressed. I refer you to the information below for more details. These forums are always full so book early to get your place.

Finally, we would like to encourage all members to take heed of the bursaries to assist members and international student leaders to attend this year’s joint National Conference with ANZSSA. Details follow in this newsletter.

We have received an amazing number of submissions for presentations and workshops. Delegates to the conference will hear a very interesting range of topics that befits the theme of ‘Broadening Perspectives for Student Success’. Don’t forget to save the date and start planning your trip to the Gold Coast.

Till next month, on behalf of National Council, I wish all members well. Do not hesitate to drop us a line through our Secretariat and follow us on our social media.

Kind regards

Event Summary:

Webinar: The International Student Perspective and Nurturing the Student Voice held on 24 May.
ISANA Queensland has held its first webinar! We would like to thank Dion Lee for a great presentation about CISA and his thoughts on the student voice and the ISANA members who joined the presentation. This is a great way for us to connect more often with our regional members and we hope it is the first step into PD sessions which reach throughout the state.

Student Hub on 28 April

Friday 28th April saw a productive, fun and informative afternoon tea at The Edge at the State Library, which is the home of the Brisbane Student Hub.  It is a great drop in and work space for international students to use. Students can access help in the form of  information, advice and referrals on healthcare, employment, budget management, accommodation and legal services, as well as connecting students to local events and activities. Thank you to Multicultural Development Association for putting on this event. ISANA members from both tertiary, secondary and TAFE attended and we met many of the Brisbane student ambassadors, who are clearly doing a wonderful job.

The Hub is open between 12-5pm  on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday or by appointment from Monday and Friday between 9am-5pm. The website for more information is: https://mdaltd.org.au/brisbanestudenthub/

Members Newsletter

Dear  *|FNAME|*

No doubt, most of you would have noted that international education has been in the news lately and unfortunately, the news has caused concerns. I encourage members to follow ISANA on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news on international education.

457 visa changes

The recently announced changes to the 457 visa sub-class has received quite a bit of coverage. While the changes do not extend to student visas, there have been concerns amongst students about to graduate of the impact these changes will have on them. This is particularly concerning for research students. A recent article in The Australian strengthens Universities Australia request for urgent clarification on the changes. Importantly, they have highlighted the continuing need for Australia to recruit world leading global researchers and academics. ISANA supports UA and the many start-up companies that will benefit from the talent that is currently being trained in our universities and research institutes.

Work exploitation of international students

The recent story on SBS on the exploitation of international students in the Vietnamese hospitality sector is unfortunately not a new story. It is distressing to read that the exploitation of vulnerable international students is a continued practice. The article does note importantly that it takes two parties for this practice to occur. Students are sometimes willing to accept poor working conditions because they are either ignorant of their rights or preferring to accept under-payment to unemployment.  ISANA reminds all members of the news in an earlier newsletter where we informed members of efforts by DIBP and the FWO to address work exploitation of international students. Here is the excerpt:

Temporary visa holder like international students with a work entitlement and who may have been exploited, need to be aware that DIBP will generally not cancel a visa, detain or remove individuals, provided they have reported their circumstance to the FWO.  Please make this information known to your international students. For more information, please refer to the media release from Minister for Employment, Sen. M Cash and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Hon P Dutton of 15 February 2017.

Sexual Health Education for international students

The ABC on Monday 24 April, 2017 featured a podcast interview with Dr Georgia Babatsikos, Deakin University, Karen Cochrane from CISA and Anthony Fleming from Allianz on international students’ lack of preparation for life in Australia when it comes to their sexual and mental health. Providing sexual health education to international students is complicated. While Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is compulsory and information is provided to students on arrival, this is not enough. Students and their families need information on the health system provided in their own language, prior to arrival for study in Australia. ISANA welcomes any feedback from members on whether this is being provided and how sexual and mental health education is being conveyed to students.

Access to Member Portal

By now all financial members should have received information on their log in information to the email account that you submitted on your membership form. Please follow the instructions to set your personal password to gain access to the ISANA Members Only section. The latest edition of the ISANA sponsored referred journal Transitions is available on the site for your perusal. We will be adding more content to this section.

As always ISANA welcomes your comments, stories and photos for our newsletter and social media sites. Till the next newsletter, on behalf of National Council, I wish you well and refer you to the latest news from the Branches.

Kind regards

Sudirman Cup 2017, the largest badminton tournament in the world which will be held for the first time in Australia from May 21-28 on the Gold Coast.

See http://www.sudirmancup.com.au/

The Sudirman Cup involves over 1500 of the best male and female badminton players from 32 countries and featuring the stars from Asian badminton powerhouse countries China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia. It is one of the most popular sports in Asia and has an estimated 220 million players across the world.

We are running a Community Ambassador Program on behalf of Badminton Australia, Gold Coast City Council and Tourism Events Queensland to engage student leaders from the participating countries. This is a great opportunity for students to take an active role in the tournament and represent their country of origin.

What is the Sudirman Cup 2017 Student Community Ambassador Program?

The Community Ambassador Program is a program where selected leaders in the participating communities (i.e. Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, Singapore, Indian, Indonesian, Korean, Hong Kong etc) will be awarded an honorary title of a Community Ambassador to spread the key messages about the tournament in any capacity they can, particularly through their personal and social networks and events. Leaders can come from the below list (but not limited to):

  • Local student leaders and groups
  • University representatives (including University professors, researchers and lecturers etc)
  • International student leaders and groups
  • Community specific sports clubs on campus
  • Badminton players (Male and female badminton current and past players as well as Badminton enthusiasts)

Community Ambassadors can also assist in supporting student groups to attend matches and join other community members from the general community and other universities to come together in official fan groups to support their countries.

Students appointed to the program will receive a uniform, Ambassador kit and tickets to see their country of origin’s qualifying matches.

PD session
Save the date! ACTiveNSW next professional development day is Thursday 25 May.

Industry expert, Paula Durance (Dunstan) will present on the student life cycle, critical incidents, and preventative measures around critical incidents.

Youth Week
We were proud to initiate a free interactive sports event for international students with City of Sydney for Youth Week. Approximately 150 students came to the centre on 7 April to participate in various activities with old and new friends. A fantastic team of student planners and volunteers, as well as support from NSW Police and City of Sydney staff, ensured the evening was a great success.

SANiTy Branch

South Australia is again offering members and non-members the opportunity to undertake Mental Health First Aid Training at an extremely reduced price. It was so successful last year that the participants believed that other staff members at their organisations should also complete the training. Please see the Professional Development page on our website for more information.

There has been a significant drain of experience and knowledge at some providers in the past few years so SANiTy is proposing new professional development to train and support new staff working with International Students. We are awaiting the release of the new National Code to plan and organise essential training for members and to encourage new memberships from staff who need support.

We would still like to encourage new committee members from Adelaide University, TAFE and private providers to come and join the committee and have some input into the professional development we offer in South Australia. The networks, knowledge and insight gained from being on the committee is priceless and an asset to any organisation.

Members Newsletter

Dear  *|FNAME|*

On behalf of ISANA National Council, I hope that when you receive this month’s newsletter, for most members the new academic year has commenced and that students have settled into the new year ISANA National Council has begun the new year with its annual planning weekend. During this weekend in March, members of National Council which includes the Executive and State Presidents meet to share information as well as plan State and National activities for the year.

ISANA Planning

All ISANA Branches will shortly upload their professional development program for the next few months. This year we have also decided that at least one PD session per Branch will be available as a webinar to enable members and interested colleagues to participate without having to leave their place of employment. Accessible professional development has been a request from members so we hope webinars will address this need.

National Council also received updates on this year’s joint national conference with ANZSSA. This year’s conference promises to be an exciting conference. However, it is important to also note that conferences are only as good as the presentations. I like to take this opportunity to encourage members to submit abstracts for presentations. To this end we have extended the deadline for referred abstracts to Thursday 6 April and Non-refereed abstracts are due on the 17 May.

Council has also agreed to continue supporting members and international student leaders to the national conference through member and student bursaries. All members will receive information on how to apply for these bursaries.

National council will continue to streamline the webpages and members will soon be able to access a members only site which should be up and running by the end of April. This is to ensure that only members can access ISANA resources and information.  By mid April you will receive a log in email to our members only site. To ensure that you continue to have access to ISANA resources, please make sure your membership is current and contact details are up to date.

Government submissions

I would like to take this opportunity to thank members who took the time to provide information to National Council on the proposed changes to the National Code and TEQSA’s publication of decisions. ISANA has submitted members’ feedback on both consultation papers.

Criterion Conference

Finally, as ISANA National President I was invited to be part of a panel at a recent two-day conference on University Community Safety and Student Well-Being organised by Criterion Conference. Along with Nina Khairina, CISA National President and Judith Uren from Study Melbourne, I shared information on international student issues and challenges. I also informed delegates of the work that ISANA as an organization undertakes to assist and support staff and international students. Delegates were mainly Senior Managers in University Student Services and this was a good opportunity to highlight the good work that many members do for international students on their various campuses.

And on that note, I thank members for their continued good work with students and the support you give to your colleagues and peers across the association.

Please do connect with your local branch and as always keep in touch via our Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin sites and email.

Kind regards
Mary Ann Seow

“Victorian Child Safe Standards, effective from 1 January 2017 – The Facts”

Date: 10th April 2017
Time: 12pm – 5pm
Venue: Graduate House, University of Melbourne, Carlton

Lunch: Networking lunch and afternoon tea available

Cost:
Member    $30 including lunch
Member    $0 no lunch

Non-member $85 including lunch
Non-member $55 no lunch

Despite numerous presentations about the new standards in 2016, ISANA has identified gaps in their application within the education sector.
There is confusion and misunderstanding about who is ultimately responsible for the child.  Many organisations subject to the standards will have
policies and processes for dealing with under 18’s in place – this PD session will help to address any gaps that exist and will answer all your questions
about what it is you have to do.

It is one of the most popular sports in Asia and has an estimated 220 million players across the world.

Members Newsletter

Dear  *|FNAME|*

On behalf of the ISANA National Council, I welcome and wish all members – new and commencing, all the best for the year ahead. With increased numbers of international students and changing structures, many of you will be busy with orientation with hopefully not under stressful conditions.

Conference News

The year 2016 ended with an excellent conference coordinated by our sister organisation ISANA NZ. Wellington was a wonderful host city and if not for the odd scaffolding, one would not know that the city had been subject to earthquake tremors a few months prior. The conference theme ‘Evidence Based Practice in International Education Services’ generated some interesting presentations. I refer members to this link for conference proceedings: http://isana.proceedings.com.au/2016-conference

This years’ conference will be a joint National Conference with the Australia New Zealand Student Services Association (ANZSSA) and will be held 5-8 December, 2017 at the STAR Gold Coast. Members will recall the first time ISANA and ANZSSA co-hosted a national conference in 2014 in Adelaide. That joint conference was a success with delegates hearing from a broad range of presenters on the theme ‘Working with synergies: Benefiting the diversity of Students’. This year’s conference theme ‘Widening perspectives of student success’ aims to share information and strategies on the holistic student experience both within the classroom and in the community. We have called for papers and I encourage members to consider submitting an abstract. Alternatively, you may be aware of some interesting work being done by non-members. I encourage you to invite them to submit an abstract.

Please note that refereed paper abstracts are due on 15 March 2017 while non-referred abstracts are due on 17 May 2017.

New Resources

The Fair Work Ombudsman has released a new tool that I encourage members to promote to students. The FWO has released Record My Hours App.  This new Record My Hours application was officially released on Tuesday 21 February. This app has been designed to help users maintain a record of their work hours and pass on information about their employment. It uses Wi-Fi and GPS tracking to automatically record a person’s working hours which can be manually fine-tuned.

Users can keep track of multiple jobs, take pictures of relevant information (such as rosters and pay slips) and export the information. The app is available in 12 languages including Chinese (simplified and traditional), Tagalog and Bahasa Indonesian.

Record My Hours is 100% secure and private and it is important to remind users that nobody can access a user’s data unless they choose to share it.

The app is free and can be downloaded from the following app stores from today:

iTunes Store (https://appsto.re/au/pBJHfb.i); and

Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.gov.fairwork.recordmyhours&hl=en)

The FWO has also compiled a list of resources for international students. You may access this list here:

Resource List

In addition to the new App that has been released, members may be interested to learn the following:

  • There will be a new reporting protocol between the FWO and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for visa holders.
  • The anonymous online reporting will be specifically designed for migrant workers and will be translated into key languages.

National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (National Code)

The Department of Education and Training has released a consultation draft of a revised National Code. ISANA will compile member feedback on the proposed changes. In order to do this, we need your comments and feedback by no later than 2 March. All submissions must be received by the Department on 10 March 2017.  I refer you to an earlier member message on details of how you may provide us with your feedback.

Council for International Education

The Council for International Education appointed by the Federal Government to oversee Australia’s National Strategy for International Education met with stakeholders for an all day workshop held at the Crown Plaza, Adelaide on Wednesday 22 February, 2017. I am pleased to advise members that ISANA was invited to participate in this workshop.

At the workshop, participants were asked to refine and/or add new priorities for medium term implementation to 2020 and identify key areas for Australian Government activity and desired outcomes. To set the scene, we heard presentations from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the development of a Foreign Policy White Paper. Submissions are to be received by 28 February 2017. We also heard from the Overseas Students Ombudsman on a report on external complaint avenues for international students and Austrade on key insights and market research on the Future Unlimited brand. The four priority areas that we worked on are as follows:

  1. Developing a nationally-consistent approach to marketing and branding of international education
  2. Providing the best possible student experience, including developing employability skills and regional engagement
  3. Enhancing international cooperation through in-country projects, research collaboration, two-way mobility and transnational education
  4. Communicating the benefits of international education to the Australian community

The Council will deliberate and consolidate the session outcomes and prepare these for government. ISANA will provide updates as they come to our attention.

Criterion Conference

Just reminder to all members that The University Community Safety & Wellbeing conference 2017 in Melbourne will provide you with practical strategies to tackle violence and sexual assault on campus, improve response to critical incidents, and provide better support for diverse student needs. Details for the conference are as follows:
22nd & 23rd March 2017 | Victoria University City Convention Centre
For further Information, please refer to this link:  https://www.criterionconferences.com/event/ucs/brochure/?c=364&slp=

And on that note, I would like members to remember that ISANA is your professional network. ISANA is here to support you with Professional Development, networking opportunities, peer support and mentoring and resources. Please do connect with your local branch and as always keep in touch via our Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin sites and email.

All the best for 2017!

ACTiveNSW would like to take this opportunity in welcoming you back and wish you all the very best for the year ahead. Here are a few upcoming events for members.

The City of Sydney Lord Mayor’s International Student Welcome Reception will be held Tuesday 4 April from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at Sydney Town Hall. ISANA representatives will be at the event to raise the profile of our activities with new students.

Late 2016 ACTiveNSW was successful in gaining partner funding for a project with the City of Sydney for Youth Week 2017. Essentially, the project is for a sports/activities event to be held at King George V (KGV) Recreation Centre, The Rocks on Friday 7 April from 4:00pm – 10:00pm.

The proposal goal was to develop friendship and strengthen culturally diverse student community networks through sports / activities. The event will be open to international and local students. A student working group, with support from ISANA and City of Sydney, will plan the event.
